It all depends what you are going to fish for and what time of the year. Let's take Bass for example. They are a fish that is a predator and you need to attract their attention. I would use live bait such as shiners for them. It depends on your style of fishing, but lures work wonders with bass.
I would go online and find out about local lakes which are made for these fish.
